It’s important to note here that Kerning is a visual exercise; it’s about the perceived amount of space between letters rather than the actual distance between them. Kerning involves adjusting your typography to look right rather than creating mathematically equal spacing. Type is a funny thing in that it can be a sort of optical illusion.

Kerning defines how letters are spaced. In well-kerned fonts, this feature makes character spacing more uniform and pleasant to read than it would otherwise be. In the image below, for instance, the examples on the left do not use Kerning, while the ones on the right do: Syntax

Kerning is the spacing between individual letters or characters. Unlike tracking, which adjusts the amount of space between the letters of an entire word in equal increments, Kerning is focused on how type looks — creating readable text that’s visually pleasing. While typeface designers build in spaces around each letter, and sometimes between pairs of letters, those spaces don’t always work in all situations, especially if you’re using a typeface in a way the designer didn’t foresee. That’s when manual Kerning comes in. Because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no two Kerning jobs will be the same.

Jul 07, 2015 . Kerning is about visual space, not actual space What sets Kerning apart from tracking is the fact that Kerning is based on visual distance, not perfectly equal measurements. The point of Kerning is to make everything look evenly spaced—but that doesn’t always mean the letters are actually spaced out evenly.

Kerning refers to the amount of space between two letters (or other characters: Numbers, punctuation, etc.) and the process of adjusting that space to avoid awkward-looking gaps between your letters and improve legibility. In this article, we will outline how to kern like a professional designer.
In typography, Kerning (less commonly mortising) is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font. There is no way to do that in DText.
However, let’s go back to our example of the letter combination A”, which have a Kerning value of -32. If we were to use a hair space throughout (rather than a Kerning value), at least there would be little math to do, because all of the white space characters (essentially a glyph) have a fixed value.
In older font formats, such as Microsoft's TrueType, the Kerning values are specified in a simple kern table where each entry consists of a pair of characters and their Kerning value.
