Dec 19, 2019 . Manual Kerning. You may want to manually kern headlines or other large type. The Kerning pairs built into most fonts are designed for use at body type sizes. If you use large type you may have to manually kern the characters to achieve optimum character spacing. Manual Kerning will kern only the characters on either side of the insertion point.

Sometimes a font’s default Kerning isn’t ideal for certain letter combinations, so you’ll want to manually adjust it so the spacing between all the letters looks consistent. It’s important to note here that Kerning is a visual exercise; it’s about the perceived amount of space between letters rather than …

May 28, 2018 . You can also use manual Kerning, which is ideal for adjusting the space between two letters. Tracking and manual Kerning are cumulative, so you can first adjust individual pairs of letters, and then tighten or loosen a block of text without affecting the relative Kerning of the letter pairs.

Determining when to use Kerning. There are a number of situations where you’ll want to manually kern your type. Text that looks good at smaller point sizes, such as in a paragraph on a magazine page, may look awkward at larger sizes, like an article headline or a billboard.

Kerning is also necessary because sometimes letters take up varying amounts of space, and the letter shape can clash with the ones on either side. The shape of a letter can create extra space between two letters creating dissimilarity between the letters. Kerning is therefore done to fix this unevenness. Kerning can be done automatically or manually.

In metal typesetting, Kerning was labour-intensive and expensive because the matrices had to be physically modified. It was therefore only employed on letter combinations which needed it the most, such as VA or AV. With the arrival of digital fonts, it became much easier to kern many glyph combinations. In digital typography, Kerning is usually applied to letter pairs as a number by which t…

Manual Kerning As the name suggests, manual Kerning is when you kern the text based on the requirements of your project. For example, for a blog post with headings and body text, the Kerning will be different than a logo design or a street sign.

In Latin script, Kerning will only be applied if specified by CSS. The configurable variable useKerning determines behaviour if font-Kerning: auto is used (the default). When using OTL tables, Kerning is set to be on by default for non-LATIN script; this is because a number of fonts use information in the kern feature to reposition glyphs which ...

Automatic or Manual Kerning. Automatic Kerning is what we’re talking about here. Microsoft Office takes the Kerning information in the font and calculates the Kerning necessary in Word, PowerPoint or Excel. More sophisticated graphics packages allow for manual Kerning or adjustment.

Automatic Kerning refers to the Kerning applied automatically by a program, as opposed to no Kerning at all, or the Kerning applied manually by the user. There are two types of automatic Kerning: metric and optical. With metric Kerning, the program directly uses the values found in the Kerning tables included in the font file.
You just may need to tweak them a bit. In addition to examples where you could use Kerning in everyday designs, there are also three different types of Kerning you’ll come across: Metrics Kerning: This type of Kerning uses kern pairs, which contains information about the spacing of different pairs of letters.
Note that the “Option” key (Alt) is your best friend when adjusting any of these, in conjunction with the arrow keys of course. Which one it adjusts depends on your selection and cursor. Place the cursor between two letters and Option+Left/Right adjusts Kerning, or with a larger text selection the same commands adjust tracking.
Rather than adjusting one pair of letters like Kerning, tracking applies consistent spacing to all the letters in a selection of text—you might adjust a single word, a sentence, or whole paragraphs or pages at once. If any tracking is necessary for your design, you’ll want to do that before Kerning.
Kerning is the process of adding or subtracting space between specific pairs of characters. Tracking is the process of loosening or tightening a block of text.
The default setting is Metrics – Roman Only. When Metrics - Roman Only is applied to Roman OpenType fonts, Kerning is the same as when Metrics is selected. When Metrics - Roman Only is applied to CJK OpenType fonts, only the Roman characters will be kerned with Kerning pairs as if Metrics were set.
Kerning may seem like an unnecessary or unimportant detail, but adding it as a quick extra step at the end of your design workflow can make a big difference in helping typography-focused projects look polished. Kerning will be most important for large, highly visible text like typographic logos or headlines.
Tracking is the process of loosening or tightening a block of text. Values for Kerning and tracking affect Japanese text but normally these options are used to adjust the aki between roman characters. You can automatically kern type using metrics Kerning or optical Kerning. Metrics Kerning uses kern pairs, which are included with most fonts.
