Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise. Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole. You may feel the tool click inside the lock. Remove the SmarKey tool. Remove the current key. Insert the new key you wish to use with the lock. Make sure your key is FULLY inserted. The edge of the key touches the indent in the cylinder face.

SmartKey is the patented technology only offered in select Kwikset keyed entry products, including electronic locks, deadbolts, knobs, levers, and handlesets. SmartKey includes security features not found in traditional pin and tumbler locks that help protect against the most common lock defeat methods – lock bumping and picking.
The Smart Key (or SmartKey) is a user-rekeyable wafer lock made by Kwikset and Weiser (Canada). It uses five wafers that interact with a sidebar to provide protection against lockpicking and key bumping.
The key in a Kwikset Smart lock system does not interact with the wafers directly. It instead interacts with many guide pins that are in a serial order . These guide pins at many levels hook into the five wafers to put them in the right position. The key will seal and block the nails from opening when someone is attempting to break through the lock.

On my Smartcode 909/910, the deadbolt latch does not extend or retract on its own during the door handing process. The door handing process was not performed correctly. Make sure to press and hold the Lock button until the battery pack is fully inserted into the interior assembly and the latch bolt starts to move on its own.
The SmartCode 909 requires 4 AA alkaline batteries, which are 1.5 volts each for a total of 6 volts to power the lock.
