The key in a Kwikset Smart lock system does not interact with the wafers directly. It instead interacts with many guide pins that are in a serial order . These guide pins at many levels hook into the five wafers to put them in the right position. The key will seal and block the nails from opening when someone is attempting to break through the lock.
The Smart Key (or SmartKey) is a user-rekeyable wafer lock made by Kwikset and Weiser (Canada). It uses five wafers that interact with a sidebar to provide protection against lockpicking and key bumping.
Press and hold the "Unlock" button on your key. Press the "Lock" button on the key three times. Your key is now reset and should function properly.
Start by inserting the original key into the lock and turning it clockwise 90 degrees. With the key still in the lock, take the SmartKey tool and insert it into the small hole next to the keyhole. Push it in firmly and you might hear or feel a tiny click.
