When practitioners move beyond basic building codes to frameworks such as Sustainable Design, health and safety may be compromised further as another design consideration takes priority.

    Labs must be on 100% exhaust systems (no recirculation/re-use of lab exhaust) Design target is 8 - 10 room air changes per hour for occupied rooms, and 4 - 6 per hour for unoccupied rooms. All designs with air changes rates <8 must be approved by EHS.

  • What are the requirements for a chemical laboratory?

     Provide chemical storage areas with shelving below 5’ high.  Avoid placement of laboratories using flammable, corrosive, or highly toxic materials in limited access areas such as basements or penthouses.  Comply with code requirements for volumes of flammable liquids, gases, and oxidizers.
