(I was particularly interested in the combination laces where tatted motifs and edgings were sewn to machine-made net to mimic the look of needle or bobbin lace! Before discussing this type of tatting, it is important to tell you about tatting in general. Tatting is a technique used to create a very strong lace using knots and loops. The lace is formed by using a series of cow hitch or half-hitch knots called double stitches to form a pattern of chains and rings.
This is a very basic stitch that only requires a couple of different movements. The first movement is to insert the shuttle through the loop you have created. Pass the shuttle right through the center of the loop. Double stitches are usually abbreviated as “ds” in tatting patterns. Bring the shuttle back over and through the new loop.
The lace is formed by using a series of cow hitch or half-hitch knots called double stitches to form a pattern of chains and rings. The tatter can leave gaps between the stitches to form openings called picots.
