That is a bit of a bummer since integrated lights are common at this price point, but to be fair it makes some sense when considering the minimalist and ride-focused design of the Lafree. The control pad here is Giant’s RideControl One system, a simple and small pad mounted on the left handlebar.

I bought a Giant Lafree Lite bike new in late 2003, and pedaled it until I broke a transmission case at about 5000 miles (aluminum casting, weak design) wore out the internal hub gears inside the back rim (around 6000 miles) then the frame broke, down near the pedals/transmission, because aluminum is weak, and weaker near a weld.

The Lafree has replaced my belt drive non electric bike (Trek Soho Deluxe). The reason why I liked the belt drive was that most of my bike riding is in town with a lot of stop lights and stop signs. With a belt drive if I miss a light I can downshift at the light without pedaling.
