As Lamaze classes can be quite popular, don’t wait until your third trimester to sign up. To ensure a spot, sign up before the end of your second trimester or around 20 weeks. As most classes span across four to six weeks, starting your Lamaze class at the start of your third trimester will give you sufficient time to finish before baby is born.

Classes are held in hospitals, birth centers, health-care providers’ offices, homes or other community locations. In-home classes, private consultations and online education are other options. Consider the duration of the class. Longer classes provide more time for interaction with other expecting parents and the instructor.

When to Start Taking a Lamaze Class. Most expectant parents begin Lamaze classes during the third trimester, around the seventh month. It’s important to register early (6 to 8 weeks prior) since classes fill quickly.
The stated goal of Lamaze is to increase a mother's confidence in her ability to give birth, through the presentation of classes that help pregnant women understand how to cope with pain in ways that both facilitate labor and promote comfort, including relaxation techniques, movement and massage.
Lamaze is the oldest and most popular technique of childbirth preparation in the United States. It originated in the 1950s by Dr. Fernand Lamaze, who was inspired by the natural relaxation and emotional support strategies he observed during childbirth in Russia.
In 1960, they formed ASPO/Lamaze (now Lamaze International), a not-for-profit organization composed of parents, childbirth educators, health care providers and other health professionals, to spread the word about Lamaze and to set the standards for Lamaze childbirth educators.
The Lamaze Six Healthy Birth Practices are based upon the most recent, evidence-based research. They are recommendations to help ease the birthing process and instill confidence. While some may have unique circumstances, all parents can benefit from understanding the options and information available to them.
This also increases the chances of your baby being healthier. The Lamaze stance is that labor should only be induced, or started by medicine, if it is medically necessary immediately. When you walk and change positions in labor, it helps you deal with intense contractions so that your body continues going into labor.
The Lamaze classes offer many comfort strategies and skills that include conscious breathing, relaxation, and management of pain which can help women avoid unwarranted medical intervention leading to a safe and healthy birth.
