Your lamp is filled too high with fragrance oil - Lampe Berger recommends that you fill your fragrance lamp up to 2/3 the way full and no more. But, in our experience filling your fragrance lamp 1/2 full with fragrance oil is better, especially if you are having this problem.
Lampe Berger Fragrance Lamp Usage Instructions and Tips Fill your fragrance lamp with your favorite fragrance oil. Make sure to not overfill the lamp. Insert your catalytic burner and wick securely into your fragrance lamp. If this is your burner's first use, let the wick soak up the fragrance oil for about 20 minutes before lighting your lamp.
Store the lamp out of reach of small children and pets, and don't leave a hot lamp unattended. Lampe Berger makes its own fragrances in a purified form of isopropyl alcohol infused with perfume.
In the beginning, the Lampe Berger was only intended to clean the air of hospitals and eliminate germs. Over the years, the perfume dimension has been added to this use. The diffused odor became more pleasant allowing the catalytic lamp to become more popular amongst households.
There is too much oil in the lamp (it can't be more than 2/3 full with oil). The wick is old and needs to be replaced (see notes above about the wick). The wick needs air to work (see notes above about the wick). There is, or was, something other than Lampe Berger oil in the lamp (see notes above about fragrance oil).
