Instructions advise that you plug the repeater in as close to the garage door as possible. Instructions: 1) Park car just outside the garage. 2) Program the repeater remote with the Homelink before plugging in the repeater. 3) Plug in repeater close to garage door opener and stretch out the antenna wire.
The simple fix is get a piece of 18 gauge wire, about 2 feet long and splice it into the antenna on the repeater (the white wire in the picture). After I did this, the range increased to about 100 feet. Not equlivent to the remote alone but enough to have it open as I pull in.
Once programmed, your car sends out the remote control signal in it's usual "older" language. It is received by the repeater (the bigger item in the pair of products). The repeater then promptly repeats the received signal, but in the "newer" language which the garage opener clearly understands.
