The aircraft cruising altitude or flight level is maintained by referencing the barometric altimeter. Procedures for setting altimeters during high and low barometric pressure events must be set using the following procedures: Below 18,000 feet mean sea level (MSL). Barometric pressure is 31.00 “Hg or less.

An altimeter is a device that measures altitude—a location's distance above sea level. Most altimeters are barometric, meaning they measure altitude by calculating the location's air pressure. Air pressure decreases as altitude increases. Here, a mountaineer uses an altimeter at the summit of the Matterhorn, one of the highest peaks in the Alps.

Dec 15, 2015 . Also German historical planes (world war the second Luftwaffe planes) use metric altimeters. On rare occasions planes may have extra-precise altimeters which use tens of feet as the scale for the large needle, e.g. wwii torpedo-bombers use such altimeters (their pilots needed to know exactly how high they are to properly drop torpedoes).

Jun 07, 2015 . The simple manual altimeter setting equipment is two certified altimeters on a vibration table. One knows the altitude of the two altimeters by the local survey. Turn on the vibration table and adjust both altimeters to read field elevation. Read the two Kollsman window values and average them. Usually they are identical.

As the (barometric) Altimeter is reading altitude based on pressure it needs to be calibrated to a reference value. In days gone by, this used to be done by setting (calibrating) the reference pressure on the “subscale” of your Altimeter, the image below shows this set to 1013mb.
