• In contrast to the previous LCI data results, the recyclability of steel at the end of a final products' life is considered in the steel product LCI. A burden is applied to the scrap input to the steelmaking process and a credit is applied to the steel that will be recycled when the final product reaches the end of its life.
The primary components of an LCI are the material inputs and outputs that are taken from or are emitted to earth. Certain material inputs, (e.g. coal, oil etc.) constitute energy as well as mass inputs, which can be calculated based on calorific value.
A life cycle inventory (LCI) study has been carried out by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) to quantify resource use, energy and environmental emissions associated with the processing of sixteen steel industry products, from the extraction of raw materials in the ground through to the steel factory gate and including end-of-life recycling.
