Another option for treating LCIS is preventive (prophylactic) mastectomy. This surgery removes both breasts — not just the breast affected with LCIS — to reduce your risk of developing invasive breast cancer.
Surgery to remove the area of LCIS and a small margin of healthy tissue that surrounds it may be recommended in certain situations. For instance, a specific type of LCIS called pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in situ (PLCIS) is thought to carry a greater risk of breast cancer than the more common classical type.
Life Space Crisis Intervention LSCI is a brain-based, trauma-informed, relationship-building verbal strategy that turns crisis situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors.
This is because LCIS rarely seems to turn into invasive cancer if it is left untreated. Women with LCIS do have a higher risk of getting breast cancer, but the cancer occurs just as often in the opposite breast (the one without any LCIS).
Unfortunately, being diagnosed with LCIS means you’ll live with an elevated risk for breast cancer for the rest of your life. That risk increases over time. For example, one study showed that 8% of women with LCIS developed invasive breast cancer five years after diagnosis. That percentage increased to 20% 15 years after diagnosis.
As is the case for other types of breast cancer, lobular breast cancer patients with positive lymph nodes have worse prognosis than those with clear lymph nodes. However, the significance of lymph node micrometastases appears to differ. Micrometastases include metastases of 2 mm or less, tiny cell clusters, and isolated tumor cells.
Less invasive treatment options are becoming widely used for invasive lobular carcinoma, yielding outcomes equivalent to those seen with more aggressive treatment. Over the past 20 years, the trend in breast cancer management has been toward less invasive treatment strategies.
