What is the LDS? The plastic carrier is an injection moulded component, produced using a specific polymer material. These select polymer blends allow adhesion of metallic antenna traces following activation of the surface by laser. This laser activates the substrate surface generating the antenna trace shape required.
Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) is a process whereby an antenna can be designed and produced onto a 3-dimensional plastic carrier. This carrier can be a separate plastic entity or an existing integral part of the customer’s product’s housing.
The component is then selectively metalized using a chemical solution to produce the conductive traces that form the shape of the antenna. What is LDS? MID stands for molded interconnect device and describes any 3-dimensional thermoplastic carrier in which conductive metal surfaces are integrated, creating a true mechatronic device.
Molded interconnect devices (MIDs) and laser direct structuring (LDS) technologies work together to integrate functions within one 3-dimensional package, resulting in high-capability devices that are compact and lightweight.
The LDS technology has been proven in numerous everyday applications. For example, it can be found in compact sensors such as pressure sensors. Cell phones also contain MIDs based on LDS technology. Millions of phones use these three-dimensional molded interconnect devices as space-saving integrated antennas.
