Suede is really a type of split leather – in fact, it the innermost layer of the hide. Most commonly, it comes from sheep, but also from deer, goats and calves. Thicker hides have the same feel but become shaggier, rather than the preferred napped feel. The thin innermost layer is cut off to create a thin, soft material.

Suede being made from split end of the hide is softer, porous and ...

Suede Fabric – When animal hides are processed to produce a napped finish, it is called suede fabric. Suede is made from the underside of the skins, or the bottom part of split leathers from larger animals. Because of its fabrication, suede is less tough and durable than other leathers, but is much softer and cozier than regular leather.

Velvet vs Suede - What's the difference? is that velvet is a closely woven fabric (originally of silk, now also of cotton or man-made fibres) with a thick short pile on one side while suede is a type of soft leather, made from calfskin, with a brushed texture to resemble fabric, often used to make boots, clothing and fashion accessories.
Therefore, suede is usually treated as a luxury material; while it lacks the durability of normal leather, it is much softer to the touch and more comfortable when worn against the skin. Compared to normal leather, suede is far more permeable, which means it lacks the waterproofing benefits of leather.
