More accurately, "line" refers to the use of an interference tube (the long 'gun-barrel' with the holes in it) that gives the shotgun mic its name. "Gradient" is short for pressure-gradient.
It is a line-and-gradient pick up Pattern, as opposed to a lobar, meaning it doesn't completely reject off-axis sound but rather has a varying frequency response to make the off-axis sound that does get picked up sound more natural. For the price, it does an amazing job of that.

The Gradient Tool has 5 different modes that can be accessed from the Tool Options at the top of your screen. While each mode has its uses, we find that we usually use either the Linear Gradient or the Radial Gradient.
