Lutron Caséta motion sensors are wireless, battery powered, passive infrared (PIR) sensors that automatically control lights via RF communication to compatible dimming or switching devices. These sensors detect the heat from people moving within an area to determine when the space is occupied.

Motion-sensor switches, by reducing electricity consumption that may happen when lights are left on, also reduces the cost of electricity to a home. How much depends on your individual home and the volume of activity, but typically, they can reduce energy consumption by 35-45 percent, and can go up to as high as 75 percent.
The Lutron system was pioneered in the late 1950s by Joel Spira, a physicist, dedicated to producing a light dimming technology that could be implemented in the home.
Light switches equipped with a motion sensor ensure that a room is lit only when someone is actually in it . They use infrared or ultrasound technology to detect movement from across the room and illuminate it faster than you could flip a conventional switch.
The automatic functionality of the Maestro® Sensor Dimmer can be adjusted to control how the lights respond upon initial occupancy. There are four available Auto‑ON settings: Enabled, Disabled, Ambient Light Detect (ALD), and OFF‑While‑Occupied (OWO). The default setting is Enabled.
Maestro occupancy/vacancy sensors automatically turn lights on when you enter a space and off when you leave, making them a convenient way to save energy in a home or commercial space.
®Occupancy sensing switch To power the sensing circuit, occupancy sensing switches require a small flow of current when the load is in the OFF state. This can be accomplished by connecting the power supply return wire to ground or to neutral.
