Manufacturing Mamod live steam models since 1936. It’s easy to see why model train sets can delight so many people. For kids, setting up model steam trains can be a fascinating hobby, what all the bright colours and intricate details, not to mention the hours of creative fun that can be had putting together the tracks and operating the locomotive as it pulls cars around an imaginary landscape.

Mamod steam engines are becoming increasingly popular for their simplicity of how a steam engine works - nothing can beat the smell and sound of a Mamod going. Considering I have done lots of articles on how to restore Mamods, I realise I haven't actually done an article on how to get your Mamod engine going! Therefore, here is the complete ...

Now this is an engine in a pretty poor state! After a conversation with the owner, I came up with the following that needed to happen to restore the engine (almost like a 'to-do' list): ...

Jan 03, 2018 . Mamod SE3. Just took delivery of this only slightly tired SE3, early 70s I guess. Mr Mamod has persuaded me I can do the necessary soldering myself, and I have ordered the valve and bush from Kevin, who is going to include some solder for me. You meet so many nice people here, honestly, the milk of human kindness and all that.

Hopefully you can see this in this photo (screws are a loose fitting holding the saddle tank down). After shoe-horning the rather tight circlip holding on the false steam ...

Mamod steam engines have been with us for more than 70 years. In that time, I am sure there are many people who have had great (and bad!) experiences with these steam engines.
Most Mamod models use simple but effective oscillating cylinders, usually single-acting. Some of these engines have regulators either in the steam feed or exhaust but many others run unregulated (in the simpler models) or have a simple reversing mechanism to alter the cutoff, thus controlling the power/speed and direction of the engine.
very brief history of the Mamod traction engine. The Mamod traction engine was first manufactured in1963 and was sold in Toy shops for 99s 6d. Malins Engineers the manufacturers of the Mamodtraction engine produced these models in hugenumbers when records stopped at the end of 1995 theyhad produced an Incredible 468,890.

Remember that fuel tablets are generally the safest to use since the methylated spirit flame is invisible. Oil [optional]. Oil, for me, is a necessity to get all the moving parts flowing freely without friction.
