What gear you need to target and catch Mangrove Jack. I personally like to run a 7ft rod around 3kg to 7kg. With a reel size between 2500 to 4000. Jacks are known for maliciously attacking your bait and running for the nearest structures, so large line capacity isn’t needed. For monster Jacks 15lb – 30lb braid should do the job.

Mangrove Jacks are such a cool fish in my opinion as not only do they smash lures and fight really dirty, you can find them in so many different locations from very small creeks in the top end to lakes and even drains in big cities. Some of the fish you see caught around the Gold Coast for example in the canals are absolute stonka’s!
The mangrove jack season around south east Queensland has been a cracker so far. Good numbers of 50cm+ fish have been hooked in most systems, with the odd 60cm fish turning up as well. Most anglers that have put in a fair amount of time chasing the red thugs this season have plenty of tales of bust ups and successes.

A simple rig that works well for Jack fishing. Local is best! If you’re fishing a creek laden with mangroves and you see Garfish and Mullet swimming around, your best bet is to source them for bait. When applying a bait to your hook it is of great importance to make sure the barb is exposed.
