Mantels and fireplace surrounds are classic for a reason. They anchor a fireplace in the room and provide a shelf for decor and meaningful items. But they are more than just a place to hang your Christmas stockings. Fireplace Mantel surrounds play a major role in protecting walls and other items around the fireplace.
A fireplace does not need to be furnished with a Mantel, but a Mantel can enhance the look of a fireplace either as part of fireplace surround or as a standalone Mantel shelf. Whether a fireplace has or needs a Mantel can come down to the condition of the fireplace and personal preference.
Examples of cabinet Mantels include corner fireplace cabinets or Mantels with built-in bookshelves. These Mantels may come with or without an attached hearth. (The hearth is the section that extends from directly beneath the fireplace.) Why Consider a Fireplace Mantel Surround ? A Mantel gives your fireplace that "finished" look.
The widths of a fireplace Mantel will vary to suit the variety of fireplace opening and chimney breast sizes, but typical depths for floating Mantels can be between 10 and 12” while typical heights can be found between 4 and 6”. It can be common practice to have a floating Mantel that is wider than the fireplace firebox opening.
Total Height: Measure the height of the wood fireplace Mantel from the top of the hearth or the floor to the bottom of the Mantel shelf. Total Width: Measure the entire width of the fireplace surround from end to end. If you do not have a fireplace surround, measure the total width of the facing.
To replace a wood fireplace Mantel or fireplace surround, you will simply have to measure the old one. Installing a new wood fireplace Mantel requires quite a few more measurements than replacing an old fireplace surround does.
