Jan 29, 2016 . It’s now generally agreed that the engine produces around 540 bhp which is way too much for a car lacking front brakes. The Napier-Railton is covered in a massive polished aluminum body that does little to help its 4518 lbs of bulk. Its design is currently credited to Gurney Nutting and somehow hides the huge length of the chassis.

Seats and tanks are 11/2in further back than in 1904, the wheelbase longer at 9ft 2in to take the crank-damper. With 35° ignition-advance, a rolling-road test gave an estimated output of 240 bhp at 2250 rpm. In 1983 the famous Napier came to Donington and was demonstrated at Brooklands.

The aircraft were to serve Napier for several years testing various versions of the Sabre engine. One of the Sabre-powered aircraft was lost on 14 September 1944. The Sabre III was similar to the II but was intended for higher engine speeds. The Sabre III was selected for the Blackburn B-37 Firebrand carrier strike aircraft.
Bulman was aware that designers of fighter aircraft were interested in such an engine and was able to arrange financial support for Napier to develop the H-24 engine. Halford’s 2,000 hp (1,491 kW) engine was given the Napier designation E107 and became known as the Sabre.
Napier employed Frank Halford, an aircraft designer who had designed many successful engines during the 1920s, to assist with their engine development. One of Halford’s business associates was Harry Ricardo, a pioneer in the research and development of the internal combustion engine.
