In recent years, the health impacts of infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, industrial and environmental catastrophes, and conflict have captured the world’s attention and reinforced the importance of strengthening public health systems to better protect communities and populations from naturally occurring and human-caused threats.
Review of recent literature on humanitarian emergencies has shown that the public health consequences of natural disasters are complex. Disasters directly impact the health of the population resulting in physical trauma, acute disease and emotional trauma.
Drivers of indirect health impacts include diversion or depletion of resources to provide routine care and decreased access to routine care resulting from an inability to travel, fear, or other factors.
The relationship between public health and emergency management came into sharper focus after the events of September 11, 2001, and efforts to strengthen ties have continued to evolve.
