Keeping Neon tetras is somewhat of a right of passage for fishkeepers. We’ve all had them! In the wild, the Neon Tetra inhabits slightly acidic waters that have temperatures lower than 25°C.
However, if you intend on keeping the minimum recommended number of tetras, which is 15, then you should get a tank that is at least 20 gallons or larger. Neon tetras are very peaceful, passive fish. The only exception to this is when they are mating.
When your Neons are young adults, you should aim to feed them as much as they can eat in three minutes twice a day. As they mature, you can reduce their feeding times to once a day and continue to follow the three-minute feeding guidance. Disease is fairly common among tetra fish, and Neon tetra disease is one of the most common.
You will find Neons eating algae, larvae from insects, and other minuscule invertebrates. Fortunately, they aren’t fussy eaters and will enjoy eating all different types of food including pellets, flakes, frozen, and live food. High-quality pellets or flakes should make the core of your Neon’s diet.
Feed your fish a varied diet 2-3 times daily. Neon tetras are omnivorous fish that live primarily on insects in the wild. Feed them wingless fruit flies and live or freeze-dried bloodworms. You should also supply them with algae (live or in wafer form), live or freeze-dried brine shrimp, and fish pellets.
Equipment - Neon tetras and cardinal tetras are tropical fish and require a heater that keeps the aquarium at about 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, they need a filter to provide a home for beneficial bacteria and to aerate and clean the water.
Neon Tetras are ideal for a community aquarium with other peaceful fish. It is best not to keep them with fish that are larger or aggressive, like angels. Good tankmates include other small tetras, hatchet fish, pencil fish, Corydoras, smaller rasboras, and peaceful barbs.
