It is a distinctly Japanese art form A wood netsuke of a wild boar, signed Toyomasa (Naito Toyomasa, 1773-1856), Tamba, Edo period (early 19th century). 6.4 cm long. Sold for: £17,500 on 8 December 2016 at Christie’s in London
Materials such as animal bones, including ivory and bull horns, ceramic and metals were used to make netsuke and they were finely sculptured by Japanese craftspersons. The Kyoto Seishu Netsuke Art Museum is located in Mibu, which used to be the western end of the capital of Kyoto during the Middle Ages.
Netsuke no Gen Crafts ( Japanese: 根付の源 Netsuke no Gen) is a Souvenir Shop in Inazuma, run by Mikoshi Genichirou . Since the implementation of Sakoku, its goods have been out of stock.
Some netsuke are signed. Some are not. Either way, valuation requires an expert eye. ‘Some of the best netsuke are not signed,’ Goodall explains. ‘Occasionally an artist wouldn’t sign the artwork if, for instance, they were creating something for someone way above their station.’
The ornately carved toggles were once an integral part of Japanese fashion. Today, as expert Hollis Goodall explains, they are pursued with a rare passion by collectors Like all art objects of great worth, netsuke distill the essence of a specific time and place.
Those toggles may have spawned the netsuke. But the netsuke we know today is a distinctly Japanese art form.
Everything else is left to the carver’s imagination. As such netsuke differ in style, subject and material as widely as the personalities of their makers, and they are consequently supremely collectable.
Westerners took up the collector’s mantle. ‘In the Meiji period, right after Japan opened to the West in 1854, Americans and Europeans discovered netsuke and immediately started collecting them,’ Goodall says. ‘Westerners were so intrigued by netsuke that carvers continued to make a living by selling them to Westerners.’
