Emerging from between bones of the spine in the upper neck, the two greater Occipital nerves make their way through muscles at the back of the head and into the scalp. They sometimes reach nearly as far forward as the forehead, but do not cover the face or the area near the ears; other nerves supply these regions.
Running across the outside of the Occipital bone are three curved lines and one line (the medial line) that runs down to the foramen magnum. These are known as the nuchal lines which give attachment to various ligaments and muscles.
Prognosis. Occipital neuralgia is not a life-threatening condition. Many individuals will improve with therapy involving heat, rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and muscle relaxants. Recovery is usually complete after the bout of pain has ended and the nerve damage repaired or lessened.
There is no test to specifically diagnose or confirm Occipital neuralgia. The diagnosis is made on physical examination findings such as a marked tenderness to pressure along the Occipital nerve; palpation of this region often will reproduce or worsen the pain that the patient is experiencing.
