An Electric Dipole is formed from a substance that possesses two equal electric charges of opposite sign separated by a small distance. The best example of an electric dipole is an atom with one electron and one proton (Hydrogen). The proton acts as the source of positive charge, while the electron possesses an equal amount of negative charge.
The dipole is relatively simple in its basic implementation and many of the basic calculations are quite straightforward. It is easy to design a basic dipole antenna that will operate on the HF, VHF and UHF sections of the radio frequency spectrum. That said, in depth mathematical analysis can require more complicated mathematical methods.
Resonant half-wave dipoles range in size from about 16 feet for the 10-meter band (28-29.7 MHz) to 260 feet for the 160-meter band (1.8-2 MHz). See Table 1. The lowest frequency at which a dipole is resonant is known as its fundamental resonance.
Although the standard feed impedance of a dipole is 73Ω (73.1Ω to be more exact) this value is rarely seen as the impedance is changed by a number of different factors. One of the major factors affecting dipoles used n the HF bands can be the proximity of the ground.
