Manual assembly involves the composing of previously manufactured components and/or sub-assemblies into a complete product of unit of a product, primarily performed by human operators using their inherent dexterity, skill and judgment.
The assembly processes may be interrupted several times to functionally test sections of the PCB as it is assembled. Manual assembly may involve both manual placement and soldering or a mixture of manual placement and automated soldering (described below). Manual assembly can be tedious work.
The best assembly operation is performed in a layered fashion. If this is not possible, the assembly should be divided into subassemblies and plugged together at a later stage. As with all other design for X principles, use a high percentage of standard parts. Employing the concept of group technology, begin with fasteners and washers.
The assembly robot is tasked with operating various products and different assemblies. To exceed the flexibility and sensitivity of the human hand and wrist during manual assembly, in addition to using the structural flexibility of the assembly robot, motion error in the assembly operation should be constantly corrected.
