• What do we need to know about service user and carer groups?

  We need to be satisfied that you have considered and can justify the service user and carer groups you have chosen as the most appropriate and relevant to the programme and profession. We use the term ‘service user’ as a broad phrase to refer to those who use or are affected by the services of professionals registered with the HCPC.

• Do we expect service user and carer involvement in programmes?

  We do not expect to always see separate ‘service user’ and ‘carer’ involvement in programmes. We appreciate that expectations about the level and type of service user and carer involvement will vary between professions, and that different programmes will meet the standard in different ways.

  We are not prescriptive about who service users and carers are. We need to be satisfied that you have considered and can justify the service user and carer groups you have chosen as the most appropriate and relevant to the programme and profession.

  For both groups, the main perceived benefit of service user and carer involvement was that they can bring their expertise from experience to issues (Service users and carers 24%; n = 19 and health professionals 26%; n = 20). ‘I believe service users have a unique perspective that I don’t have.’ (Health professional #86).

• What is service user involvement in health care?

  Service users involvement is considered as one of the important aspects of planning, management and decision making process in the delivery of health care to service users. Service users' involvement is not the same as public involvement and partnership arrangements in health care.

• Should service users and carers be involved in safety interventions?

  All the health professionals and the majority of service users and carers saw potential for service users and carer involvement in interventions to improve safety, to ensure their experiences are taken into consideration.

• How difficult are service users and carers to raise concerns?

  The sample of 185 participants included 90 health professionals, 77 service users and 18 carers. Seventy seven percent of service users and carers reported finding it very difficult or difficult to raise concerns.
