What is Okra? Okra is a tender heat-loving vegetable that grows 4 – 7 feet tall. The plant produces green and sometimes red seed pod which you can harvest when 3 to 5 inches long and sometimes longer. The plant is easy to cultivate as you will learn from this okra cultivation guide.
Okra does love its personal space, so avoid overcrowding plants. It is advised that you just focus on one plant per pot. There are a few ways to ensure healthy growth of your okra plants. Okra plants enjoy 1-2 inches of water per week, and applying it at the base of the plant is advised.
Cover the seeds with ½ inch of garden soil, and water the newly planted okra seeds to saturate the soil. Keep the soil around the okra seeds from drying out while the seeds germinate. Water when the soil begins to dry, but do not provide water to create puddles around the seeds.
Pests and Diseases of Okra. Okra is susceptible to root rot nematode and fusarium wilt, and to southern blight in hot, humid zones. Green stinkbugs, Japanese beetles, and leaf miners may feed on the leaves but generally are not a serious problem.
When to Start Okra Seeds. Start your okra seeds indoors anywhere from mid-March to mid-April, depending on where you live. It takes four to six weeks for the seeds to germinate and grow strong enough to transplant outside, so count back three weeks from the expected last frost date, and you'll know when to start the seeds.
The best time when to plant okra is about two to three weeks after the chance of frost has passed. Planting okra should be 1 to 2 inches apart in a row. Once your growing okra is up and out of the ground, thin the plants to about 1 foot apart.
