• What are the competences of oleC?

  The competences Olec 1: Access OLE Construction Sites Olec 2: Undertake Basic OLE Construction Activities under Direction Olec 3: Construct, Renew, Enhance and Modify OLE in accordance with Design Drawings and Specifications

• Do I need OleC 1 if working on site?

  Yes, working on a site (which potentially imports risks or exposes personnel includes taking photographs, surveying, taking notes etc) all require Olec 1. I am working installing foundations and other general groundworks; do I need Olec 1?

• Do I need to read Handbook 16 before taking oleC 1?

  We recommend you read up on Handbook 16 prior to attending your Olec 1 course, you get 1 attempt at your final assessment, you need to achieve 80%. The pass rate at the centre for the Olec 1 course is 99% and if you don't pass the first time you can attend another test free of charge!

• What is the difference between OleC 2 and 3?

  Olec 2: Undertake Basic OLE Construction Activities under Direction. Olec 3: Construct, Renew, Enhance and Modify OLE in accordance with Design Drawings and Specifications. Olec 4: Control and Supervise OLE Construction, Renewal, Enhancement and Modification Activities in line with Specifications.

• What is an overhead line?

  An Overhead Line is a set of 3 wires, onefor each phase, referred to as the conductors. At Transmission Voltage Levels the conductors are normally strung on steel-latticed towers of many different shapes and size.

• What are the mechanical factors of overhead line safety?

  An overhead line is subjected to uncertain weather conditions and other external interferences. This calls for the use of proper mechanical factors of safety in order to ensure the continuity of operation in the line. In general, the strength of the line should be such so as to provide against the worst probable weather conditions.

• Why are overhead power lines so important?

  Because overhead lines are exposed to trees and animals, to wind and lightning, and to cars and kites, they are a critical component in the reliability of distribution circuits. Overhead constructions come in a variety of configurations (see Figure 2.1).

• How much does it cost to build an overhead power line?

  Overhead construction can cost $10,000/mi to $250,000/mi, depending on the circumstances. Some of the major variables are labor costs, how developed the land is, natural objects (including rocks in the ground and trees in the way), whether the circuit is single or three phase, and how big the conductors are.
