Almost all OEM lubricant specifications refer to a finished lubricant. It is an uncom - mon occurrence to see the individual con - stituents of a finished lubricant (i.e. additives or base stocks) specified by an OEM. However there may be a hierarchy of lubricant specifications designated based on requirements for standard performance

SPECIFICATIONS. Specifications are important as these indicate the performance of the oil and whether they have met or passed the latest tests, or whether the formulation is effectively obsolete or out of date.
OEM Engine Oil Lubricant Specifications White Paper Learn more at exxonmobilchemical.com/synthetics Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) lubricant specifications are intended to provide the end user with a degree of certainty that if a specified lubricant is utilized that the equipment will operate properly and reach its expected life.
ACEA itself does not certify oils or license or register compliance certificates. Oil manufacturers are themselves responsible for carrying out all oil testing and evaluation according to recognised practices. On this site we present the current ACEA oil sequences. Why are specifications important?

Among the lubricants typically found in these specifications are gear oils, turbine oils, hydraulic fluids, com pressor oils, greases, sOLId lubricants, multi-purpose bearing oils, engine oils, cutting fluids, total-loss lubricants and others. For small facilities or fleets, creating lubricant specifications can be a relatively simple exercise.
If there is a single lubricant with special properties for a specific application, a lubricant specification document should be produced just for it. Creating these specifications may involve several different departments such as engineering, maintenance and purchasing.
The OEM has not indicated what types of additive the lubricant should have, what base oil should be used and how to adjust the viscosity requirement based on the ambient conditions of your facility verses the test facility conditions the OEM used to determine these values.
