Put the saucer on top as a lid and then refill with water when needed. My ollas are in the greenhouse and they leak out about an inch of water per day.

The general rule of thumb when selecting an olla for a particular pot or space, is to keep in mind that the water seeps out approximately the radius of the olla; the larger the space, the bigger the olla you will need. A plant’s water needs should also determine the Olla size (tomatoes and melons and other high water plants need a larger Olla)

But keep in mind the shape of the olla and where the water will be. Large round ollas with a thinner neck will seep most of the water below the roots of these crops so initial surface watering may be necessary until they get established. It is not as efficient technique to use with grains and legumes because of the coverage necessary.
