Facts about the OLMEC Civilization According to their history, the OLMECs were the first people who settled down in the coastal regions of central America, about 1500 years before Christ was born. From about 900 BC, their capital city moved to La Venta. Distinctive sculptures and the exclusive temple architecture was developed over eight centuries.

They subsequently became a dominant agricultural and trading power. Discovery of the first colossal head in 1962. The OLMECs flourished for the next 1200 years, spreading throughout southern, western, and central Mexico and present-day Guatemala. Eventually, neighboring cultures absorbed them.
Decline of the OLMEC and the Epi-OLMEC Civilization: La Venta went into decline around 400 B.C. and the OLMEC civilization vanished along with it. The great OLMEC cities were swallowed up by the jungles, not to be seen again for thousands of years.
