Decline of the OLMEC and the Epi-OLMEC Civilization: La Venta went into decline around 400 B.C. and the OLMEC civilization vanished along with it. The great OLMEC cities were swallowed up by the jungles, not to be seen again for thousands of years. Why the OLMEC declined is a bit of a mystery.
The name OLMEC is translated to “people of the rubber country” and was awarded to them in 1929. It refers to the culture developed in southern Veracruz and northern Tabasco, in the territory of modern-day Mexico.
The first OLMEC center, San Lorenzo, was all but abandoned around 900 BCE at about the same time that La Venta rose to prominence. A wholesale destruction of many San Lorenzo monuments also occurred c. 950s BCE, which may indicate an internal uprising or, less likely, an invasion.
They were the first Mesoamerican civilization, and laid many of the foundations for the civilizations that followed. Among other "firsts", the OLMEC appeared to practice ritual bloodletting and played the Mesoamerican ballgame, hallmarks of nearly all subsequent Mesoamerican societies.
Living around the Gulf of Mexico for nearly 1,000 years, the OLMEC civilization was a major influence on the region up until 300 BC. They are often considered the first ordered civilization in the Americas and are thought to have even influenced the Mayans and the Aztecs. One city is estimated to have been the home to 13,000 people at minimum.

Many thrones, colossal heads, and other major pieces of OLMEC art have been found at La Venta. Complex A, a religious complex located in the royal compound at La Venta, is one of the most important ancient OLMEC sites. The ancient OLMEC had a rich culture.
OLMECs were known to often bury their sculptures including large ones as a ritual act of memory. The OLMECs influenced civilizations across Mesoamerica, particularly in sculpture. Also many OLMEC gods reappear in the later civilization in a similar manner such as the sky-dragon and the feathered-snake God.
