Water is vital for all species of plants, and the calathea ornata is no different. As a tropical plant, it loves moisture. The soil should always be moist, but it shouldn’t be completely saturated. To determine when it needs to be watered, feel the soil. If the top inch or two feels dry, it’s time to water it.

Calathea Ornata Pinstripe Plant, Cathedral Plant The Pinstripe Plant, also called Calathea Ornata, is a gorgeous tropical houseplant with a reputation for being a bit, well, finicky to grow. Reputation aside, you’ll love this houseplant if you’re crazy about its lush foliage, unique patterns and stripes, and burgundy undersides.
The best place for a calathea ornata is in an east- or west-facing room near a window. If you have your plant in a south-facing room, keep it away from the window or shade it from direct sunlight. With plenty of bright light, you will notice that the creamy-white pinstripes turn to pink as the calathea plant matures.
Finally, place a few drops of neem oil in the soil and along the leaves as a natural insecticide to keep them away. A disease that can severely damage your calathea pinstripe is root rot. When the plant is overwatered or cannot drain excess water, root rot can set in and stunt the growth.
A tropical plant by nature, calathea ornata sports lustrous bands of color that earn it the apt nickname of the “pinstripe plant.” There are over 300 different types of Calathea plants, with multiple hybrids and commonly cultivated species around the world.
