Jan 12, 2022 . HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The same labs shouldering much of the nation's polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 testing are getting slammed yet again amid the Omicron surge, according to ABC News.

Jan 01, 2022 . In fact, if Omicron did come from a lab, the researchers at that lab may have been working on vaccines for Covid itself. So far, the data suggest that Omicron is milder than previous variants, in part because it replicates less well in the lungs. And indeed, some people have described it as a “natural vaccine”.

Hopefully not a Chinese lab. Omicron is much more contagious than delta, so there will be a big wave of infections soon. So unless it is way less harmful than delta, there is also going to be a wave of hospitalizations soon. Omicron cases are doubling in two to three days in several countries. At that rate, one case becomes a million cases in ...

“Thank goodness we have some concrete data now,” Benjamin Neuman, a virologist at Texas A&M University, said in an email. He said scientists had worried that Omicron would be able to elude entirely the first line of defense, the neutralizing antibodies. Not so. The lab research supports the need for boosters, he added.
The scientists reported a large, 41-fold drop in the virus-blocking ability of antibodies — “much more extensive escape” than seen against previous variants using similar experiments. Still, previous infection followed by vaccination or a booster is likely to “confer protection from severe disease in Omicron infection,” the study said.
Initial data indicate that Omicron may be more transmissible even than delta, the variant that became dominant throughout the world this summer. There is no solid evidence that Omicron is more or less likely to cause severe disease.
At the same time, preliminary research has also shown that Omicron might grow faster in the upper respiratory system — the nose, the mouth, the throat, the windpipe, the bronchi — than Delta or the original coronavirus.
