In terms of system requirements, orchestra plug-ins and orchestral libraries can be equally demanding on disk space and RAM. Libraries are samples of live recordings, providing you the best recording you can get. We recommend you use an external hard drive or solid-state driveto save you libraries.
Here’s a very simple orchestral VST that puts an entire orchestra at your fingertips. The One Track Visual Orchestra is quite literally an orchestral VST that’ll only take up one track in your DAW. The caveat here is that you’ll need a pretty big MIDI keyboard since the orchestra is sectioned into different MIDI key ranges.
As with the orchestral libraries made by Orchestral tools, the focus is on individual instruments per part (as opposed to ensemble patches). For much of my jazz and big band writing, I look for a convincing upright bass sample and this is just about the best one I’ve ever heard and played.
Renowned for their high-end sample libraries, curated tutorials and free “labs” libraries, BBCSO Discover is a curated version made up of some useful samples taken from the BBC Symphony Orchestra Core + Pro libraries, which are the big brothers and sisters of the starter library.
Like CineWinds it’s a Kontakt library which works in either the Player or Full version of Kontakt. If I were buying samples on a budget and needed the best bang for my buck, the composer cloud by EastWest is the place to start.
I often want to use a big band library to produce intimate sounding club-style mock ups and I simply can’t do that with Glory Days. That said, for filmic big band styles (and even 20’s and 30’s mock ups requiring mute choices) it has a huge amount of choice and can’t be discounted.
