Limerick, a 1980 Monk 36 Trawler. We bought Limerick Christmas 2015 to cruise the Pacific Northwest. She is hull number one and had been very well taken care of by her previous owners. HBO’s series “The Pacific” caused lots of folks to become interested in the life of Merriell “Snafu” Shelton, the character based on a real Marine of the same name. As I’ve written before, the real Snafu lived just down the road from me growing up. He died a couple of decades ago.
The HBO special "Pacific", produced by Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks, relates some of SNAFU and Sledgehammer's story as well as those of other Marines who served in the Pacific during the war. When Shelton died in 1993, Sledgehammer was one of his pallbearers. Merriell Shelton was a Louisiana Cajun.
Pfc./Cpl. Merriel "Snafu" Allesandro Shelton was one of Eugene Sledge's fellow Marines. He got his nickname from his cocky personality and demeanor. Though he has already had some humanity beaten out of him by his introduction, he slowly loses even more of his humanity as the series goes on.
