Dec 16, 2015 . I can say for sure that my gore tex jackets breath much better than urethane-coated fabrics (except in the above circumstances, where nothing breathes). And I can say for sure they breathe much worse than lightweight, uncoated, un-laminated shells. My four-season gore tex down sleeping bag is a failure, a relic of 1980s utopianism.

Paclite isn’t often lauded for its breathability compared to Gore’s more premium designs, but I found the Mountain Hardwear Exposure/2 to be a good all-around performer. Throughout testing, the jacket has let both heat and moisture escape without issue, even in warmer conditions while hiking in Patagonia.
The Exposure 2 Paclite is still a solid rain jacket, but for technical uses like backcountry skiing or winter climbing, you're better off with a true hardshell with a burly 3-layer fabric, like the Arc'teryx Alpha FL . At just 11.4 ounces for a size large, the Mountain Hardwear Exposure/2 Paclite would be an exceptionally light hardshell jacket. Unfortunately, after three months of testing, our review team concluded it performs more like a rain jacket than a technical hardshell.
In addition, Mountain Hardwear offers a number of other variations in the Exposure collection, including an anorak version of the jacket tested here ($250), a Paclite Plus model ($300), and a 3-layer model that uses more breathable Gore-Tex Active ($425). And to complete your kit, waterproof pants are also available.
