The wood sands easily, but for a glass-smooth finish, we recommend a paste wood filler or sealer to even out its open grain. Clear finishes should contain an ultraviolet inhibitor to reduce PADAUK's tendency to darken.
African PADAUK. Color/Appearance: Heartwood color can vary, ranging from a pale pinkish orange to a deep brownish red. Most pieces tend to start reddish orange when freshly cut, darkening substantially over time to a reddish/purplish brown (some lighter pieces age to a grayish brown).
It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers because of its unique color and low cost. PADAUK is perhaps the most frequently misspelled (and mispronounced) wood species, with Padouk, Paduk, and Paduak being common misspellings. The most common pronunciation is pah-DUKE, it is sometimes mispronounced as Paducah—a city in Kentucky.
African PADAUK ( P. soyauxi ), sometimes referred to as vermillion, is the only PADAUK species readily available today. Others occasionally sold include Andaman PADAUK ( P. dalbergioides ), Angola PADAUK or muniga, kiaat ( P. angolensis ), Burmese PADAUK ( P. macrocarpus ), narra ( P. indicus ), and sandalwood PADAUK ( P. santalinus ).
Ironically, the chemical cocktail that makes African PADAUK (Pterocarpus soyauxii) distasteful to insects and fungi contributes to the color that makes it practically irresistible to woodworkers. One of the most strikingly colorful woods, PADAUK is widely esteemed for its bold red-and-orange heartwood.
PADAUK turns a deep-brown color with only hints of its red-orange core. Even finish barely slows the color change. Ask your hardwood dealer for Chakte Viga ( Caesalpinia platyloba ). Though it, too, will darken over time, this Latin American wood retains its red-orange color longer than PADAUK.
Unfortunately, Ralph, nearly all brightly colored woods, including PADAUK, will change colors fairly quickly after machining. PADAUK turns a deep-brown color with only hints of its red-orange core. Even finish barely slows the color change.
