Drain Efficiency vs. Power-added Efficiency and the

By definition, the term efficiency is a measure of how well a device converts one energy source into another. However, according to the laws of Thermodynamics, 100% efficiency is unobtainable. Therefore, the side effect of this inefficiency is the generation of heat. As I am sure you are aware, in PCB design, heat is generally an unfavorable property. Also, in terms of measuring efficiency, there is a method called Power-added efficiency (PAE). This method is a t…

Power added efficiency is similar to drain efficiency, but it takes into account the RF power that is added to the device at its input, in the numerator. PAE is the most-accepted figure-of-merit to use to compare single devices. It is better to chose the highest PAE rather than the highest drain efficiency, grasshopper...

  • What is power-added efficiency and Rae?

Typically the RAE of solid-state devices varies between 10% and 80% when the devices operate at several tens of GHz and a few GHz, respectively.

  • What is drain efficiency of an amplifier?

The formula is as follows: In regards to amplifiers, efficiency is the ratio between the output power to the DC input power, and thus referred to as drain efficiency. However, this type of (drain) efficiency can be misleading to Engineers and designers because it does not consider how much power is used by the amplifier.

  • What is meant by the term “draindrain efficiency”?

Drain efficiency is a measure of how much DC power is converted to RF power, for a single device (see amplifier efficiency for a chain of devices). The problem with using this measurement as a benchmark is that it doesn't take into account the incident RF power that goes into a device.
