People with chronic pain often feel increasingly desperate as time goes on and their pain continues. Each failed new treatment makes this feeling of desperation worse. Sometimes these treatments can produce significant problems of their own, such as side-effects from medicine and discomfort from procedures and exercises that they have tried.
The inter-agency task force identified several gaps in current best practice for the management of acute and chronic pain. Fragmentation of pain care and a lack of coherent policy for pain management limit best practices. Multimodal, non-opioid therapies are often underutilized, particularly in the perioperative and peri-injury settings.
The authors recommend a balanced approach to acute and chronic pain management that is individualized, multimodal, and multidisciplinary, and that is based on a biopsychosocial model of care.
Developed by a broad group of representatives and stakeholders, this report identifies gaps, inconsistencies, and updates and provides recommendations for best practices for managing acute and chronic pain. Before you go to the doctor, review this checklist of questions about opioids and naloxone.
