Do not use cold water to water your houseplants. Use water that is about room temperature to avoid shocking the plant's roots. Low humidity levels can be the biggest hurdle that houseplants must overcome during winter.
Spider plants hate cold, so move them away from windows when winter arrives. Avoid fertilizer, and don’t trim during the winter — spider plants need all their chlorophyll to survive during cold months. Regularly rotate the pot so one side doesn’t get all the sun.
The expanding and contracting of the soil can push plants right out of the ground. A layer of snow is excellent winter mulch for plants. But if there is no snow, here are some other ideas for insulating your plants.
For succulents, only water every two to three weeks, and for cacti, stop watering entirely. The exception is winter-flowering plants, such as Christmas cacti and poinsettias, which need watering whenever the compost feels dry. With shorter days and less sunshine over winter, it’s important to maximise the amount of light reaching your plants.
