A startled Pangolin will cover its head with its front legs, exposing its scales to any potential predator. Pangolin are one of the most trafficked mammals in Asia and are increasingly trafficked in Africa. In China and Vietnam, Pangolins are in high demand. Their meat is considered a delicacy in certain cultures and their scales are used in traditional medicine and folk remedies to treat a range of ailments.
In Chinese, the product is said to contain chuan shan jia, which is Pangolin scales. Pangolins meet up once a year to mate, but mothers abandon their young after about two years. As the animals get older, their soft, white scales begin to harden and grow darker. Scientists believe Pangolins are the only scaled mammal.
