Folding machine types. All folding machines fold paper one sheet at a time (some have a manual feed where you can manually put in up to 5 sheets and the machine will fold them). Letter and Legal Size machines fold paper up to 8 1/2" x 14" (legal size). Large format machines can fold larger paper, up to 11" x 17", some even larger. In countries that use the Metric System, different sizes are sold. Here is a graphic showing the sizes.
The machine first pulls in a sheet of paper using friction wheels on the feed tray. As the paper is pulled into the machine, it is pulled and pushed into the first folding plate. The paper bounces off that plate and makes its way to the second folding plate.
The folding of paper is a physical change. Paper is made up of cellulose molecules. Folding the paper does not alter the structure of cellulose. Any action which alters the structure of cellulose will be called a chemical change.
What are Letter Folding Machines and What do They Cost? In 2020 a quality letter folding machine can cost anywhere from $89 (standard letter folder) to $3700 for heavy commercial letting folding solutions. When companies have to work with large quantities of mail, the time and cost of having letters folded by hand quickly escalates.
A multi-sheet feeder is a slot or feed tray located somewhere on the top middle section of the machine. This feeder allows the operator to manually feed 3-4 sheets (depending on the machine) for folding. Depending on the machine, these sheets can be stapled or non-stapled. This is a pretty nice feature, however, it is not completely automated.
