With a large number of injured soldiers and civilians disabled during combat, Parasport offered a fantastic method of treatment and rehabilitation. The man behind the Paralympic movement was a German neurologist named Ludwig Guttmann, a leading pre-World War II neurologist.
Parasport is generally divided into three broad disability groups: deaf people, people with physical disabilities and people with intellectual disabilities. Each group has its own history, organisation and approach and each group has made significant contributions to what is considered modern-day Parasport.
There are now 23 Parasports forming part of the Paralympic movement heading into the London 2012 Paralympic Games. However there are hundreds of other Parasports (competitive or otherwise) that disabled people participate in as Parasport increases in popularity around the world.
The term "Parasports" arose from a portmanteau of the words paraplegic and sports. Though the sport has since included athletes of disabilities other than paraplegia, the term persists as a catch-all.
Iris Pruysen competes in the long jump at the 2014 Paris Athletics Paralympic Meeting. Parasports are sports played by people with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities.
