The World Para Athletics Championships, the second major event in the discipline after the Paralympic Games, will bring together around 1,700 athletes and more than 800 coaches and officials from 120 countries in 2023. Iris Pruysen competes in the long jump at the 2014 Paris Athletics Paralympic Meeting. Parasports are sports played by people with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities.
With a large number of injured soldiers and civilians disabled during combat, Parasport offered a fantastic method of treatment and rehabilitation. The man behind the Paralympic movement was a German neurologist named Ludwig Guttmann, a leading pre-World War II neurologist.
Parasport is generally divided into three broad disability groups: deaf people, people with physical disabilities and people with intellectual disabilities. Each group has its own history, organisation and approach and each group has made significant contributions to what is considered modern-day Parasport.
