There are several kinds of parking brake systems, depending on whether the vehicle has drum or disc service brakes in the rear. Vehicles with rear drum brakes have the simplest parking brake system because the service brake shoes are also the parking brake shoes.
The parking brake cable connects the mechanical hand lever or foot-operated brake to the rear brakes. Also known as an emergency brake, this system functions mechanically and is separate from the regular hydraulic brakes. This allows the vehicle to be stopped if the normal brakes fail.
Conventional parking brakes employ a cable that connects handbrake lever and brake shoes. When the driver operates the lever, the tension in the cable increases thereby forcing the brake shoe (or pads) on brake drum (or disc ). Thus, wheels cannot move further.
