Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors, a made-for-TV film based on Parton's song of the same name, and featuring narration by Parton, aired on NBC in December 2015, with child actress Alyvia Alyn Lind portraying the young Parton. Parton also had a cameo in the sequel, which aired in November 2016.
In 1967, musician and country music entertainer Porter Wagoner invited Parton to join his organization, offering her a regular spot on his weekly syndicated television program The Porter Wagoner Show, and in his road show.
Parton and Dean helped raise several of Parton's younger siblings in Nashville, leading her nieces and nephews to refer to her as "Aunt Granny," a moniker that later lent its name to one of Parton's Dollywood restaurants. The couple have no children of their own, but Parton is the godmother of performer Miley Cyrus.
Dolly Parton. Childhood & Early Life. Dolly Parton was born on 19 January 1946 at Sevier County in Tennessee, USA. She was the fourth of twelve children born to Robert Lee Parton, a farmer and construction laborer and Avie Lee.
Dolly Parton performs during a concert in Tokyo in 1979. Dolly Parton is a singer, songwriter, record producer, author, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist, and she does it all well. Her career began as a songwriter in Nashville. Today she estimates she’s written more than 3,000 songs.
In May 1966, Parton married her husband, Carl Dean. Dolly Parton and Carl Dean. Parton was 18 when she met 21-year-old Dean outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1964. They were married in Georgia against the wishes of her record label, which thought that marriage would hamper the singer's career.
By the time her hit "Joshua" reached #1 in 1970, her fame had overshadowed his, and she struck out on her own, though still recording duets with him. She left him for good to become a solo artist in 1974. Dolly gained immense popularity as a singer/songwriter. Dolly won numerous Country Music Association awards (1968, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976).
