Presence speakers are more of a gimmick than anything. With Atmos, the whole concept of "presence" speakers is a thing of the past. Notice the post you linked is 12 years old. From what I can tell, you have 5 speakers, so I would set them up as 5.1. Three (L/C/R) in the front and two surround speakers connected to the L&R Surround.

Older pre Atmos Yamahas had presence function, as did others ala PLIIZ. Ime it makes the mains sound taller as the “presence” feature simply extracted material from the LR. Iirc, newer Yamaha AVR’s also call height speakers presence speakers to refer to the ones used for Atmos, dtsX and auro 3d playback.

DolbyAtmos/DTSX. On my Yamaha RX-V673 there is an option for front presence speakers. These are two speakers that you put above your front speakers. They aren't Atmos. For studio music or music not designed for surround I prefer 2 channel or 2.1 depending on the speakers and music. If its live or produced for surround 5.1. The other thing is minimize comparison listening. If it sounds good to you then stick to it.

The presence speakers only work with the Yamaha DSP modes, but you don't need the presence speakers for the yamaha dsp's to work correctly. If you use the presence speakers, then you can't use the surround back speakers at the same time, it's either one or the other.
To clarify the above comment; The presence speakers cut out the 2 extra rear surround speakers for a 7.1 setup, but you can still have a traditional 5.1 setup when using the 2 presence speakers up front. The presence speakers got a favorable review in one of the Audioholic Yamaha A/V Receiver reviews, which prompted me to try them out.
Select this option when presence speakers are installed on the front wall. Select this option when presence speakers are installed to the ceiling. Select this option when using the Dolby Enabled speakers as the presence speakers. This setting is not available when “ Front Presence ” is set to “ None ”.
